CLDE591 SPAN571: Listening to Bad Bunny: Understanding the Social Realities of Our Students
This course uses the music, public persona, and cultural presence of Bad Bunny as a lens to explore the social, emotional, and cultural experiences of today’s youth, particularly Latinx and Afro-Caribbean students. Through a combination of lyrical analysis, discussion, cultural theory, and student-centered practices, educators will develop tools to better connect with and support students navigating issues of language, identity, marginalization, resistance, gender expression, and cultural pride. We also explore the Reggaeton phenomenon and its global impact, examining how people from different geopolitical contexts are drawn to this genre. We discuss how the subjectivities of young people get manifested in this music. The coursework can be in English or Spanish, according to the student's preference, and is instructed by Dr. Wanda Ocasio-Rivera, a native Spanish speaker.
All course readings and videos will be in English and Spanish. All student work, except where otherwise noted, must be completed in English or Spanish.
