This online course will explore some of the most important Afro-Caribbean religions and their cultural manifestations rooted in different spiritual beliefs that came from Africa during the Conquest and Colonial periods. The teachers will introduce some aspects of the phenomenology of these beliefs, the practices of their followers, and the important role of their discourses for oppressed and marginalized groups. Some of the topics to be discussed are the ideas spirits, Santería - Cuba, Espiritismo - Puerto Rico, Vodou - Hispanola, sacrifices, The Rastafarians, Spiritism, Candomblé, the idea of evil, syncretism, and Botanicas in their role in healing people. Also, we are going to pay special attention to the influence of these religious experiences in Caribbean art, music, literature and other alternative texts.This course is conducted in Spanish by a native speaker, Dr. Wanda Ocasio-Rivera.
